Welcome to the third in our series about meeting our members. This week we hear from Lucy Collins who is our Marketing Director for 2017. Since joining just over a year ago Lucy has really thrown herself in to JCI and already has big plans for the future.

How long have you been a member?

Just over a year as I joined in April 2016.

Why did you join us?

It was the international aspect that interested me most as JCI has around 200,000 members in over 100 countries.  There is so much going on all over the world and, as a member, you have the pick of what you would like to do and where.

The flagship JCI event is the annual World Congress, which rotates all over the world. This year it is being held in Amsterdam and next year it will be in Goa.  We also have European Conference which was in Basel this year and hits Riga next year.  There are also many other regional conferences and events going on all over the world that your JCI membership gives you immediate access to.

What is the one thing you want to work on with JCI Sheffield?

I would like to work on my public speaking skills.  This is not something I thought I would ever say but JCI does tend to have that effect!  I would also like to understand more about leadership skills in terms of how to get the best out of others.  JCI is the ideal place to do this as it's not ever a case of pass or fail.  it's really about understanding and developing yourself in a safe and supportive environment.

What is your proudest JCI Moment?

Even now, being relatively new to JCI, there are so many moments that stand out.  The main one was being picked for a sponsored place to attend JCI's very first International Summit on Peace in Malaysia this September!  Literally as I was writing this I received an e-mail asking me to present a project at the Peace Project Showcase at the event in Malaysia.  I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do this yet, but I have said 'yes' and will figure out the details later.  That's just how we roll.

How has JCI Sheffield helped you?

JCI Sheffield has upgraded my level of ambition and made me realize that so much more is possible.  In JCI you are offered opportunities pretty much as soon as you join that you just wouldn't get anywhere else.  You aren't expected to have the 'right' kind of experience or background.  It's really incredible that there is no limit on what you can achieve, provided you are willing to show up and make the effort.  That just doesn't happen in many places.

What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?

I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to join.  JCI is one of the most remarkable organizations in the world.  Just get in there and make an impact!
